Imrove Your Dogs Dry Skin Problems

When your dog is showing signs of skin problems (dry or flaky skin), it's a sign that they may not be producing enough of the oils that help to retain moisture in the skin. Just like us, our dog's skin requires regular moisturising and nourishment to remain supple and smooth.

Dry skin problems are also more likely to cause hair loss in dogs as well as secondary health issues through exposure to environmental factors, such as dust mites, pollen and other allergens. As we move into spring, this can become even more of a problem.

If your dog’s skin is dry and vulnerable, it allows irritants to pass through the layers of the skin more easily, leading to red and inflamed areas which can cause considerable discomfort for our pets. This can lead to dog hair loss as well as other issues.

What about omega oils?

The key omega oil that helps your dog’s dry skin retain moisture is an omega 6 oil called Linoleic Acid (LA for short). LA is the skin's moisture barrier, and if your dog is short of this omega 6, they are more likely to have dry and flaky skin problems i.e. dog dandruff. You can get LA from seed oils such as golden flax and star flower.

Another important omega 6 oil that helps your skin conditions in dogs. GLA plays a key role in the replenishment of healthy skin. You find GLA in natural seed oils such as Evening Primrose Oil and Starflower oil, and it's very important as your dog is unable to produce beneficial amounts themselves, so rely on supplementation in their diet.

What can you do to help your dog?
