Electric Cigarettes on Planes

According to reports, it’s possible that there will be a ban placed on Electric cigarettes on planes in the United States. These electronic devices give a dosage of nicotine to simulate the physical smoking sensation so that you don’t have to wait through the whole flight with no nicotine. At present, some airlines allow them as an option to cigarette smoking, but it’s not allowed on all flights. A letter from Ray LaHood, who is the US transportation secretary, was released earlier this year and appears to be suggesting that within months there will be an official ban for these e-cigs on planes.

Even though health issues concerning the existence of cancer causing agents and various other harmful toxins were brought up by some organizations about the devices, e-cigarettes became widely accessible over the last 10 years. In fact, at times these devices are promoted as an aid for smoking cessation in Europe and the United States.

Ryanair announced in 2009 that they were selling and allowing passengers to use the devices on flights. Based on other reports, passengers on board EasyJet and BMIbaby flights could also use e-cigarettes. Of course, it’s clear that all the airlines are not chasing after this smoking business. A number of airlines have started to inform travelers that the devices were not permitted on flights. Some distributors of e-cigarettes are still claiming that the product can be used anywhere that the regular ones are not allowed.

Virgin Atlantic and British Airways have both cautioned that e-cigarettes will be restricted on their flights, whilst the sites for several other leading airlines such as Air Canada, Etihad, American Airlines, KLM and Japan Airlines states that the use of e-cig is not permitted on board their flights.

Even though real cigarette smoking was banned on board flights in the US more than two decades ago, this is still a worrying factor. Some figures were unveiled recently showing that the FAA charged 696 persons for smoking, with fines adding up to 1000′s of dollars in some cases.

When it comes to whether or not Electric cigarettes on planes will be allowed, the Food and Drug Administration are the likely candidates to decide on this for future use. The FDA was unsuccessful with a court case recently after attempting to treat the e-cigs as devices that would deliver drugs, instead of tobacco products since the heat nicotine is made from tobacco.

If you are not able to use Electric cigarettes on planes for long flights, there are other alternatives such as stocking up with nicotine patches, gum or inhaler; sleep for most of the flight; eat sweets; walk around for exercise and try to read books, magazines or watch films to distract your cravings for a smoke.
